Health damage

Assessment of health risk

TerrAria deals with the Integrated Environmental and Health Impact Assessment  (IEHIA) or Health Damage Assessment (HDA) in order to assess health risk, through a scientific-technical process that, by correlating toxicological data with the level of exposure, allows quantitative estimation of the risk from exposure to toxic and/or carcinogenic substances and the human health consequences of potentially harmful events, in terms of the likelihood of such consequences occurring.

The methodology used by TerrAria refers to nationally and internationally recognized regulations, procedures and guidelines. The main international sources relate to guidelines from the USEPA (US Environmental Protection Agency), the WHO (World Health Organization), the OEHHA (Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment of the California Environmental Protection Agency), and the EU Directive 2020/367 of the European Commission of March 4, 2020 amending Annex III of Directive 2002/49/EC. At the national level there are the guidelines of ARPA Veneto, the Interministerial Decree of April 24, 2013 drafted by the Ministry of Health in consultation with the Ministry of Environment and Protection of Land and Sea, and the “Guidelines for Integrated Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (IAHIA) in Environmental Authorization Procedures (SEA, EIA, AIA)” drafted by ISPRA in February 2016.

Shown is an example of a map of the increase in carcinogenic risk (per million) associated with annual average PM10 concentrations.
