System for optimal location of biomass plants
BioEnerGIS involves the design and development of an optimization model integrated into a geographic decision support information system (DSS) for the optimal location of biomass-fueled plants.
Project: BioEnerGIS Project Type: Intelligent Energy – Europe IEE/07/638/ SI2.499702 Budget: 1’482’180 Euros Duration: 2008 – 2011 Number and Partners involved: 7 project partners; Regione Lombardia (IT), Bioenergy 2020+GmbH (A), Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – CRASL (IT), Slovenian Business & Research Association – SBRA (SLO), Centre Wallon de Recherches Agronomiques – CRAW (B), Finlombarda S.p.A. (IT), South West College (UK) Role: Subcontractor Client: Cestec SpA (now Finlombarda SpA) |
The result of the project was a GIS-based DSS, called BIOPOLE, which allows for the identification of the most suitable sites-in terms of energy demand, environmental, social and economic sustainability-for the location of biomass combustion, and/or biogas plants to service district heating microgrids. Four European regions representing four areas with different environmental and economic peculiarities were considered: Lombardy (IT), Northern Ireland (UK), Slovenia (SLO), and Wallonia (B).
