As part of the planning of noise impact reduction or containment, TerrAria is in charge of supporting entities in the preparation of Strategic Noise Mapping, Noise Mapping and Action Plans. Specifically, TerrAria prepares the complete documentation, in compliance with regulatory obligations, assessing the population exposed to different noise levels, analyzing the mitigation works implemented and planned, as well as the effects of these actions in terms of reduction of exposed population, adopting a modeling approach.
In Europe, noise pollution has gained relevance as a factor in environmental degradation and impairment life quality. Often, however, noise does not have the same prominence as other forms of environmental pollution and tends to be overlooked. The main causes of noise pollution are mainly:
- Road vehicular traffic;
- Rail and air traffic;
- Manufacturing and commercial settlements.
Noise from vehicular road traffic, in particular, is the cause that exposes the greatest number of people to the highest noise levels in most urban settings. Given the importance and impact that noise pollution has, the European Union has established Directive 2002/49/EC on the management and assessment of environmental noise. In implementation of this directive, Italy issued Legislative Decree 194/2005, with the aim of preventing and reducing the harmful effects resulting from exposure to environmental noise. This decree defines the procedures for carrying out noise mapping, strategic noise maps, action plans and noise remediation plans.
