MAQES

Multimodel Air Quality and Environment Suite

TerrAria, in collaboration with Enviroware, developed the MAQES (Multimodel Air Quality and Environment Suite) modeling platform and carried out training of technicians from the Milan Health Protection Agency (Agenzia di Tutela della Salute, ATS) in modeling, use of the tool and interpretation of the results obtained in modeling simulations on the platform.

MAQES implements the atmospheric pollutant and odorant dispersion model LAPMOD. It is a three-dimensional, nonstationary particle Lagrangian model, suitable even under complex orographic conditions, of inert or radioactive substances, emitted either in the gas phase or as aerosols. LAPMOD thus enables the simulation of dispersion processes of pollutants and odors in the atmosphere, as well as the estimation of depositions and pollutant particles on the ground for environmental and population health impact assessment.

The platform integrates the meteorological field of the area of interest, obtained as output from the CALMET model, which is needed as input for LAPMOD. The modeling system allows the user to select model calculation domains, duration and simulated pollutants.

The tool is now used by ATS Milan to do health impact and epidemiological assessments.
